David Braly + Architectural Painting

Architecture, History and Art are eternally linked; each creatrix of the others — a memorial to their existence.

As an architecturally educated Southerner, appreciation of the classical tradition and the land comes naturally, unconsciously, and passionately. My drawings, paintings and murals are portrayals of human landscapes. They are histories of their subjects, actual or imagined, but nonetheless real for the use of recognizable fragments invoking the spirit of place. This tradition is a mentor to my work, whether it appears ‘realistic’ or ‘abstract’.

Some works are like archeological digs, revealing layers of the past intermixed with elements of the present. Others are architectural landscapes, interpreting the artistic forming of our earthly realm. Some lie just beyond the threshold of the readily apparent and historically accurate. All are expressions of the civilized cultivation we engage, both culturally and physically, to shape ourselves to capture a paradise.
